At this point in time I do not wish to pursue the art, craft or profession of acting. I am currently working on an English Education degree with a hope to teach theatre in the secondary schools. However, in the future, I would perhaps like to pursue the art and craft of acting. To me acting is an art with trememdous potential for expression. It uses as its medium the human body and soul, bringing it closest to the essence of art -- humanity. Acting should be radical, that is get to the root of reality. Yet, at this time, I am more interested in studying acting from an analytical and philosophical standpoint as a part of the construction of a theoretical model of theatre based on existentialism. This particular orientation has caused me problems when I have attempted to engage in acting.
In regard to what I have learned about the profession of acting, I must say that I'm appalled. I find it very undesirable to place a price on a piece of art or an artist. I am disgusted by the idea of trying to sell a particular feature of oneself in the name of acting, or anything for that matter. It is the commercial aspect of acting which is the greatest motivating factor for me not to pursue acting as a career. I realize that this may be a very knaive position, however I must go with my feelings and rely on the knowledge which I posess at the moment. Nonetheless, I am open to new knowledge and am interested in changing what I view as deplorable conditions in the profession of acting.
